When to Go

Fiordland is one of the wettest inhabited regions on earth, and the usual advice — go when it is sunny — is close to backwards here.

Rain makes the fiord better. The waterfalls that make Fiordland what it is are rain-fed and many of them simply are not running in dry weather. A grey, streaming day on Doubtful is the version photographers hope for.

What actually varies

Crowding, but from a low base. New Zealand’s summer, December to February, is the busiest and also the warmest and longest-lit. Even then Doubtful is quiet by any normal standard — 30,000 visitors a year spread across the season is not Milford.

Daylight. Summer gives you long evenings, which matters most on the overnight cruise. Winter days are short enough that the timing of the connections gets tighter.

Cold. The fiord is cool year-round and the deck is where you want to be. Winter is genuinely cold on the water; bring more than you think in any season.

The thing that can stop you

Not rain — the lake crossing. Severe weather can cancel the Manapouri leg, and if that goes, the whole day goes with it, because there is no other route in. That is a small risk in any month and a slightly larger one in winter.

If the trip is important to you, do not schedule it on your last possible day in the region.

Wildlife by season

Bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and seabirds are resident or regular year-round rather than migratory, so there is no season you must hit. Nobody can promise a sighting in any month, and an operator who does is overselling.

The practical answer

If you are choosing purely on the fiord: any month, and do not cancel for rain. If you are choosing on comfort and daylight: spring through autumn. If you are choosing on emptiness: the shoulder months, though the difference here is smaller than it would be anywhere else.
