Day or Overnight?

The day cruise gives you 2.5 hours on the fiord. The overnight gives you the fiord after everyone has left, plus kayaks and a silence you cannot buy on a day boat.

Updated September 2026

NZ$359 against NZ$749. The honest framing is not “twice the price for twice the time” — it is two different products that happen to visit the same water.

What the day cruise is

Nine hours door to door from Manapouri, of which about two and a half are on the fiord. You cross the lake, ride the Wilmot Pass, cruise, and reverse it. It is the standard trip, it is what most people book, and it is enough to understand the place.

You are on the water during the middle of the day, alongside whatever else is running.

What the overnight is

You board in the afternoon and stay. Dinner is a buffet aboard, there is a berth, breakfast, and — the part everyone remembers — kayaks or a tender boat off the back, plus a period where the crew cut the engines and let the fiord be completely silent.

By evening the day boats have gone. Doubtful takes 30,000 visitors a year to begin with; at night you effectively have a 421-square-kilometre fiord to yourself.

Take the day cruise if

  • You are fitting Fiordland into a moving itinerary
  • The NZ$749 is genuinely a stretch
  • You are prone to seasickness and would rather not sleep aboard
  • You have children who will find a night on a boat long

Take the overnight if

  • You can give it the night, and you came to Fiordland for Fiordland
  • You want to be on the water at dusk and dawn rather than at noon
  • Kayaking on a fiord appeals — this is the only way to do it here
  • You have done Milford and want the opposite of it

The practical differences

The overnight sails from the same Manapouri departure, so the journey in is identical. Bring warm layers regardless of season; the fiord is cool and the evening on deck is the point. Cabins are simple rather than luxurious, which is worth knowing if NZ$749 has you expecting a cruise ship.

What neither buys you

A guarantee of wildlife. Bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and penguins are all resident or regular, and the fiord is quiet enough that boats are not competing for sightings — but nobody can promise them, and an operator that does is overselling.
