Is It Worth It?

The arithmetic is uncomfortable and worth facing directly: a Doubtful Sound day cruise is about nine hours door to door for about two and a half hours on the fiord.

What the other six and a half buy you is the absence of other people. Whether that is a good trade is genuinely a matter of what ruins a place for you.

Go if

Crowds are what spoil things for you. Doubtful takes around 30,000 visitors a year against Milford’s 700,000. That is the product.

You want wildlife more than drama. Resident bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, seabirds — in a fiord with few enough boats that nothing is queueing.

You have already done Milford. Most people who rate Doubtful highest are comparing it to a busy day at the famous one.

You can take the overnight. At that point the question stops being close.

Think again if

You have one day in Fiordland. Milford gives you a fiord in two hours with a road to the wharf. Taking Doubtful instead means most of your day is transport.

You are travelling with young children. Nine hours of structured connections is a lot, and there is no way to shorten it once you have started.

You want Mitre Peak. It is at Milford. Doubtful is wider, longer and lower — grander in scale, less vertical in drama. People who came for the postcard are the ones who leave disappointed.

The forecast is severe. Rain is fine and arguably better — the waterfalls only run properly when it is wet. But weather that threatens the lake crossing puts the whole day at risk, and it is a long way to come for a cancellation.

What reviews consistently get right

The silence. On the day cruise the crew usually stop the boat and stand everyone down for a few minutes with the engines off, and it is the thing people describe afterwards rather than any particular view. On the overnight it lasts longer.

What they get wrong

Treating it as a longer Milford. It is not the same fiord with more time — it is a different kind of place that happens to be in the same national park, and the comparison people should make is between busy and spectacular and empty and vast. We set them side by side here.
